The Society of Communication

We live in a time of globalisation and international relationships, and speaking foreign languages is indispensable in order to communicate with people around the globe. We offer English language courses, as it is the de facto universal language, as well as courses in languages spoken in our European neighbourhood and in all corners of the globe.

At the same time, we offer computer classes in order to provide everyone with the necessary tools for worldwide communication, focusing on professionals, for whom it is an essential skill in the workplace, as well as those who feel intimidated by the new technologies.

Did you know?

In the 1960s, before the invention of the Internet, the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan coined the term “Global Village” to describe the impact of technology on modern society.

Why learn a second (third, fourth, etc.) language?

Charlemagne, the 1st emperor of Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire, is attributed with the following quote: “To know two languages is to possess a second soul”.

Similar sayings are found in various countries, however, beyond quotes and opinions, it is a fact that there are tangible benefits from learning a second language, according to contemporary neurological research.

Increase in brain mass (Mårtensson et al., 2012), delay in the appearance of dementia (Craik et al., 2010), memory enhancement (Morales et al., 2013) even changes in the way we perceive the world (Athanasopoulos et al., 2010) are some of the scientific findings on the benefits of learning languages.

“Kolik jazyků znáš, tolikrát jsi člověkem”

( translation: “The more languages you speak the more of a person you are” )

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, co-founder and the 1st president of Czechoslovakia

Certifying language skills is an arduous but necessary step of learning a language, which allows the use of the acquired knowledge in areas such as the workplace, education, etc.

In Europe, a place of many countries and even more languages, the Council of Europe composed the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ( CEFR ) which divides learning a language in 6 levels which are becoming widely accepted as the European standard for grading an individual's language proficiency.

In Greece, the CEFR levels ( A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 ) are recognised by the state and the results of the various language examinations correspond to one of them in order to be accepted by organisations such as the Council for Civil Personnel Selection ( ASEP ). At the same time, the National Foreign Language Exam System ( KPg ) was created, certifying language proficiency ( at the moment only in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Turkish at the levels A to C1 ).

The majority of the examinations carried by various organisations are now compliant with the CEFR. The Research Centre for Language Teaching Testing and Assessment of the English Language and Literature faculty of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has published the results of a 2010 research on English language examinations on the website Comparing ELTesting Suites in Greece, where you can find their correspondence with the CEFR levels.
